My boy Michael Avishay, one half of west coast noise rockers Ghost Animal, just launched a new record label with this single from Stockton, California surf rockers (duh). To describe this a sandy sunshine romp on the beach in the waves - I dunno, the imagery feels silly anymore - but shit, I do not get tired of a well-written garage pop tune. #neverjaded. Just too fun. Doesn’t get old.

Smiley listening to “Casino Life” by French Montana Retired Union Square, NYC
How do you feel when you listen to that? “I just like his music. He’s like… you know 50 Cent, of course, when 50 Cent was coming up he had that raw energy from the street. Everybody could relate to him. Well you know, 50’s been in another tax bracket now so he doesn’t make music like that. So French Montana is like the next coming to 50 Cent. He’s from New York, he’s from the street, he’s talking about the same things, and he’s lived what he talks about. He’s pretty good.”
Did you select that or was it on shuffle? “Ah, no. I was just playing the mixtape. I go through different mixtapes and I just felt like listening to him today. Yeah.”
Does he have other mixtapes? Do you have more? “Yeah, he has other mixtapes. Casino Life: Mr. 16, he has a mixtape with Waka Flocka, I forget the name of it. He has quite a few.”
So you’ve been listening to him for a while? “Yeah, cause he’s been on for I’d say about a year or two? He signed with, ah, I think he signed with Puffy most recently. He’s doing big things.”
You know what you’re talking about. Are you an enthusiast or are you in the music industry? “I was in the industry. I actually just left the industry in August, so I’m like, ‘retired.’ So I’m just chillin’ but yeah I used to work for a music magazine, XXL.”
— Guess what! I’m about to launch a new iPhone app called Postography. It’s unrelated to Private Noise but it’s damn cool. It allows you to create and send real-life, paper postcards from your phone. Sign up HERE to get it first. And do me a favor… spread the word!
